LaDell and Phyllis Swiden’s Trip to Budapest, Hungary

In May LaDell and I attended a meeting for Travel Leaders owners in Budapest, Hungary.  Hungary is a former Eastern block country that was under Communist rule.  They have been a democracy for the past 15 years and are slowly adapting to the change.  Budapest is the capital city and is made up of two separate cities, Buda and Pest that are divided by the Danube River.  Our hotel was on the Buda side. The hilly side has a stunning view overlooking the Danube and the Pest side that is very flat.

We were pleased to have a very warm reception by the people in Hungary.  Although Magyar is the official language most people speak English so we did not have a communication problem.  Hungary is a small country without much industry.  Tourism is very important to them.  There are many beautiful churches, museums and ancient ruins.

One evening we were taken by bus to a horse farm where we were met by horses pulling open wagons that took us the final few miles.  They put on a horse show demonstrating the many talents of the riders and horses that are unique to Hungary.  This was followed by a wonderful meal accompanied by folk music and dancing.  The Hungarians have won many gold medals at the Olympics Equestrian events.

The most popular items to shop for are paprika, goose liver pate and handcrafted linens.

Budapest is a popular stop for people who do river cruising on the Danube and I think anyone would find it an interesting place to visit.
